About Elder Care Support

The Elder Care Support (ECS) program delivers culturally safe aged care connection and coordination for Aboriginal Elders and older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in South Australia.

AHCSA works in partnership with Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs) and other Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs) to support Elders and their families to understand, navigate, and access the aged care services they are entitled to. AHCSA supports the ECS workforce through coordination, guidance, and system-level support to strengthen culturally safe aged care pathways across the state.

The program aims to:

Support older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to understand and engage with the aged care system, receiving greater local support.

  • Assist Elders to navigate My Aged Care.
  • Provide client support and advocacy throughout assessments and service coordination.
  • Support hardship applications and help remove financial barriers to care.
  • Support telehealth and online access to help Elders connect virtually with services.

Reduce barriers across the aged care journey and increase the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people accessing aged care services, achieving or exceeding equality with non‑Indigenous people.

  • Map local services such as transport, meals, allied health, and social supports.
  • Use clear referral pathways so workers know who to call and how to link Elders into services.
  • Keep emergency and support contacts updated to ensure fast responses in urgent situations.

Strengthen culturally safe aged care services across South Australia.

  • Work with services to improve cultural safety and responsiveness.
  • Share local insights and advocate for community‑led, Elder‑centred approaches.
  • Build service capability through training, resources, and strengthened connections with ACCOs/ACCHOs.

How the Elder Care Support service works for our Community

  • Personalised support: ECS workers are specially trained and understand the needs of Community
  • Where you feel comfortable: They can meet Elders at home or wherever they feel safe, with family or carers if preferred. There is no cost to Elders or their families
  • They come to you: If needed, they can provide transport to support a yarn or appointment
  • Your voice matters: Elders guide the support they receive, whether that’s help with cleaning, shopping, cooking, or personal care
  • Ongoing support: ECS workers connect Elders with appropriate aged care services and continue to check in. If needs change or a service isn’t working well, they help address issues and find solutions

How AHCSA supports our members and the ECS workforce

AHCSA works alongside member ACCHOs to ensure they and their ECS workforce are supported to deliver high-quality, culturally safe aged care support. Through the ECS program, AHCSA provides training, coordination, advocacy, and aged care system navigation support, assisting members to connect Elders with appropriate services and respond to challenges as needs change.
