The new Aged Care Act 2024 begins 1 November 2025. It’s a chance to build a system that truly respects our Elders — their wisdom, culture, and connection to Country, but this will only happen if their unique needs are prioritised. Without urgent action, our Elders risk being left behind.
Our Concerns
- No independent First Nations Aged Care Commissioner.
- Slow reform progress on Royal Commission recommendations.
- Co-contributions that will create financial hardship.
- Lack of cultural safety and Aboriginal leadership in care.
- Fee pressures on ACCHOs. Forcing Aboriginal organisations to charge Elders, undermines community-controlled principles and reduces access to culturally safe care.
- Lack of engagement and co-design with the Aboriginal Community Controlled sector.
AHCSA Recommendations
We’re calling for:
- A permanent First Nations Aged Care Commissioner.
- Full implementation of Royal Commission reforms.
- No Co-Contributions -Fee-free care for Aboriginal Elders
- Investment in Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations.
- Recognition of unique regional and remote challenges.
