We are proud to announce the launch of the new film and video resource suite, Aboriginal Birthing in Aboriginal Hands: The Journey of AMIC in South Australia—a powerful celebration of two decades of culturally safe, community-led maternal and infant care. This milestone marks an important moment for the AMIC program as it reaches it’s 20 year anniversary. This moment has been shaped by community and showcases the importance of AMIC for future generations.

For 20 years, the Aboriginal Maternal and Infant Care (AMIC) specialisation has supported Aboriginal women through pregnancy, birth, and early parenting with a model grounded in cultural safety, trust, and self-determination. The newly released film captures this journey with honesty and strength, highlighting the voices of AMIC Practitioners, families, Elders, and community leaders who have carried this work forward.

The launch of these resources represents a moment of reflection, pride, and renewed commitment to improving outcomes for Aboriginal women, babies, and families across South Australia.

As we celebrate this launch, we also look to the future – one where Aboriginal women continue to lead and where cultural knowledge is upheld. This suite of resources ensures its story will continue to inspire for decades to come.

“The AMIC program shows the power of self‑determination in action. For 20 years, Aboriginal women have led the way in shaping maternity care that is culturally safe, community‑driven, and grounded in our own knowledge systems.” says AHCSA’s General Manager of Primary Health and RTO, Eva Pratt.
