Make sure our communities are counted.

Every five years, the Census counts every person and household in Australia. The information collected helps governments, health services and organisations plan for the services and infrastructure our communities need — now and into the future. The next census is due on the 11th of August 2026 and from late July 2026, households will receive instructions on how to complete the Census.

The Census asks questions about your age, languages spoken at home, education, employment and more. Your responses are private, confidential and protected by law.

Why is the Census important for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities?

At AHCSA, we know that being counted matters.

When Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are undercounted, our communities can miss out on the funding, services and resources we need. Accurate Census data helps inform decisions about healthcare, housing, education, community programs and other essential services.

In the 2021 Census, the Australian Bureau of Statistics estimated that around 170,752 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were missed, representing a 17.4% undercount. That means thousands of our people were not reflected in the data used to help plan services.

Every person counted helps build a more accurate picture of our communities and strengthens the case for better investment where it is needed most.

Completing the Census

If you know where you’ll be on Census night, you can complete your Census as soon as you receive your instructions.

There are several ways to take part:

  • Complete it online
  • Request a paper form
  • Receive assistance from a Census field officer if required

Every answer matters. Every person counts.

By participating in the 2026 Census, you’re helping ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are visible in the data that shapes future decisions.
