Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)

HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system (the system in our body that fights infection to keep us healthy). With the right information, regular testing and access to treatment, we can keep our mob and our communities safe, strong and healthy.

Some Key Facts:

  • In some cases, a person can have HIV without any symptoms. Testing is the only way to know your HIV status.
  • HIV can be treated. When HIV is found early and treated, people can live long healthy lives and greatly reduce the risk of passing HIV on to others.
  • HIV is mostly passed on through unprotected sex and/or sharing of injecting equipment (including needles, syringes, filters, spoons, swabs and tourniquets).
  • Regular HIV testing is recommended for anyone who is sexually active – knowing your status helps you look after yourself and others
