Twenty-five years ago, the Aboriginal Health Council of South Australia (AHCSA) officially became an incorporated body under the South Australian Associations Incorporation Act. This milestone marked the beginning of AHCSA as a truly community-controlled organisation, governed by a Board of Directors drawn from Aboriginal Community Controlled Health and Aboriginal Health Advisory Committees across South Australia.

Over the past 25 years, self-determination has been a defining and enduring theme of AHCSA’s journey. From its inception, AHCSA has been led by our Members, our Board, and our Community. We are and always have been, accountable to our Members because without them, AHCSA would not exist.

Our Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs) across the state embody the leadership, resilience, and strength required to improve health and wellbeing for our mob. Together, these services, alongside AHCSA, have paved the way for stronger systems, better outcomes, and healthier futures for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

As we mark this 25-year milestone, we acknowledge the histories of our Members. Their enduring contributions have laid the foundation on which AHCSA has grown as a peak body, providing ongoing support every step of the way.
