The SA Patient Assistance Transport Scheme (PATS) provides subsidies towards travel and accommodation for eligible people who need to travel to access approved specialist medical services that are not available locally. Standard eligibility generally applies when the nearest suitable service is more than 100 km each way from home. People travelling 50–100 km each way for chemotherapy or radiotherapy may also be eligible if they travel at least three times in one week.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients travelling to specialist medical appointments can receive their subsidy before they travel when the required paperwork is provided before and after treatment. They do not need to provide a concession card for the first night of accommodation, and one travel escort can receive a subsidy without approval from the treating specialist. Aboriginal advocacy organisations may also receive funding to support patients with PATS claim forms and travel or accommodation arrangements.
