Safetalk Suicide Awareness

Aboriginal health is holistic and interconnected.

About the SafeTALK Suicide Awareness team

The AHCSA SafeTALK Suicide Awareness program works with Aboriginal health services and the broader health sector across South Australia to address issues such as suicide, self-harm, and mental illness.

The program supports ACCHSs and other services working with Aboriginal people in helping to provide tools to adapt and deal with daily challenges (resilience and coping skills) while leading a fulfilling life - with understanding and recognition of Aboriginal resilience, diversity and unique community needs.

Education and Support

In partnership with Livingworks, AHCSA's Social & Emotional Wellbeing officers provide education and training to Members through SafeTALK workshops.

SafeTALK workshops feature:

  • Presentations and guidance from a LivingWorks registered trainer
  • Access to support from a local community resource person
  • Powerful audiovisual learning aids
  • The simple yet effective TALK steps: Tell, Ask, Listen, and KeepSafe

Fact: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people face a much higher risk of suicide than do non-Indigenous Australians.

Most people with thoughts of suicide do not truly want to die, but are struggling with the pain in their lives. Through their words & actions, they invite help to stay alive.
