NDIS

The Aboriginal Health Council of South Australia (AHCSA) is working in collaboration with NACCHO to provide support for all member services to build capability and capacity to deliver the NDIS for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as part of phase two of the Capacity Building Project funded by the Jobs and Market Fund.

Background

In 2018, NACCHO was engaged by the Department of Social Services (DSS) to undertake a Capacity Building Project in relation to the NDIS.

The aim of the project was to identify barriers for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health organisations in becoming viable service providers of the NDIS (or to be able to facilitate access to the NDIS) for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in a range of context and areas.

NACCHO worked with its member ACCHSs to identify issues and potential solutions/models of service that would meet this aim. The final report delivered to DSS outlined the issues, barriers and needs of ACCHSs in providing NDIS services with 22 recommendations for change.

Goals/aims of the program

The project aims to increase the number of ACCHSs registered and delivering services sustainably to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people under the NDIS, and build the capacity and capability of those organisations and communities.

AHCSA’s support

AHCSA has employed an Engagement and Sustainability Officer, who is a dedicated resource available to ACCHSs, supporting them to register and deliver services sustainably under the NDIS.

The Engagement and Sustainability Officer advocates for the needs of the community as well as provides the necessary support to the member service so that they can effectively deliver NDIS programs to those who need it.

Yarning circles

A series of yarning circles will bring ACCHSs together to identify and develop solutions for NDIS service delivery challenges.

ACCHSs are invited to attend one Yarning Circle each, and will be brought together based on their remoteness. Programs will be co-created with ACCHSs who will indicate key topics of interest via the Expression of Interest survey which was sent to ACCHSs.

Project outcomes:

  • Member services will have increased access to, and choice and control of, services available for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living with a disability in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
  • An increased number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander NDIS registered providers will be available in urban, rural and remote communities
  • An expansion of existing services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander regional and remote communities will occur and include NDIS services
  • Increased community awareness within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities of the NDIS and increased participant registration
