The 2024 Palliative Care in Queensland Priorities report has seven points of priority for PCQ and the sector. Priority 3 is to continue funding quality palliative care and dignified end-of-life care for Queenslanders accessing aged care. The significance of providing dignified end-of-life care for the elderly, both within aged care facilities and in the community, is increasing every year with the growing populations of older Queenslanders requiring aged care services. Complaints about aged care services – Insights for providers report 2023 has been released. The highest number of complaints involved medications. The second highest number of complaints in residential care were 'Personal Care - personal and oral hygiene'. This was higher than complaints for staffing, communication, falls, catering, physical environment, constipation and continence. I hope someone will listen to us when we say that we can improve oral health care with best-practice training of staff and funding of oral health practitioners in the aged and home sectors. We are ready and willing to assist. https://lnkd.in/eXjaGZ5Y

Challenging systemic racism and bias in health care is a daunting task. Like peeling an onion, the more you uncover, the more you realize how much needs to be done. But we can’t give up. Systemic racism in health care exacerbates illness and cost lives. Decades of research into pulse oximeters shows that the device provides inaccurate oxygen level readings in people with darker skin tones. And a research study involving Roots Community Health Center and Sutter Health showed that when relying on the devices, care for African Americans was delayed, including receiving oxygen and admission to the hospital, for Covid. (https://lnkd.in/g9e8Nyaf) More than a year after challenging over a dozen device manufacturers to fix the flaws or add warning labels, very little has been done. So we have continued our efforts to reduce potential loss of life by filing a lawsuit in Alameda County Superior Court seeking to compel manufacturers to fix the devices, label them, or stop selling them. Unfortunately, the device flaws are still not well-known even among healthcare workers, and they remain in use by paramedics, doctors offices and hospitals. I hope that everyone - especially those in healthcare - will spread the word about the device flaws as we continue to fight for technology that works for all. #healthequity #knowledgeispower #rootsempowers
Roots Community Health Center has filed a suit against leading manufacturers and sellers of pulse oximeters, including Walgreen, CVS, and GE Healthcare, after numerous studies reveal Pulse Oximeters are less reliable for darker skin tones, potentially leading to suffering and loss of life of people within the Black community. Despite Roots’ written warnings to the companies that they could be subject to legal action if they did not address or warn about the problem with their flawed products, none of the defendants took action. Because of this, Roots Community Health Center has decided to take action to show our commitment to our advocacy efforts aimed at protecting your health and the health of our entire community!
