Coronavirus (COVID-19)
The rollout of COVID-19 vaccines was coordinated by the Commonwealth Department of Health, but vaccination rollout specific to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities has been coordinated between the Indigenous Health Division of the Department of Health and the National Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO).
In addition, SA Health have managed access to vaccination outside of the Primary Health Care services and have established clinics at various locations, which have been managed within each of the Local Health Networks. You can find out more about these sites here.
Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services were invited to submit an expression of interest to the Commonwealth if they were willing to provide vaccinations at their health service.
These expressions were assessed and ultimately granted approval after having met the specific required conditions and implementation of policies and procedures.
For some services, there was not adequate space or resourcing to allow for safe vaccination distribution to occur and therefore links to availability at Local Health Services has been provided instead.
All staff involved in the vaccination program rollout have undertaken the Commonwealth COVID-19 vaccination training package as a minimum requirement.
